Pet Vaccinations And Preventative Care in Jandakot, Perth WA

At Perth Pet Vet, we are dedicated to the health and wellbeing of your pets. Our vaccinations and preventative care services play a vital role in protecting your pets from infectious diseases and ensuring their long-term health.

Why Vaccinations are Essential

Vaccinations help protect pets from potentially life-threatening infectious diseases. For puppies, kittens, and rabbits, early vaccinations are essential as their immune systems are still developing. Adult pets also need regular booster vaccinations to maintain their immunity as protection diminishes over time. In addition, antibody titre testing is an option to check your pet’s immunity to diseases, ensuring they stay safe and healthy.

Regular Check-Ups and Preventative Care

Routine check-ups and preventative treatments are essential for maintaining your pet’s health. During check-ups, we monitor your pet’s overall health, address any concerns, and recommend preventative care such as flea, tick, and heartworm treatments. These treatments are essential to preventing illness and ensuring your pet leads a long, healthy life.

Vaccination Guidelines for Pets

Vaccinations for Dogs

Puppies receive their first vaccination between 6-8 weeks of age, followed by boosters at 10-12 weeks and 14-16 weeks. Annual booster vaccinations are essential to keep your dog protected. Your dog should be vaccinated against the following infectious diseases:

  • Canine Distemper
  • Canine Infectious Hepatitis
  • Canine Parvovirus
  • Canine Parainfluenza
  • Bordetella Bronchiseptica (Kennel Cough)

Vaccinations for Cats

Kittens are vaccinated at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks of age. After that, an annual booster vaccination along with a health check is recommended.

Your cat should be vaccinated against:

  • Feline Infectious Enteritis (Feline Panleukopaenia)
  • Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis
  • Feline Calicivirus

For outdoor cats, we also recommend vaccinating against:

  • Feline Leukaemia
  • Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)

Vaccinations for Rabbits

Rabbit Calicivirus (RHDV)

Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV) is a fatal virus affecting rabbits, with two strains present in Australia: RHDV1 and RHDV2.

  • RHDV1 has been used since 1996 as a biological control agent to reduce feral rabbit populations.
  • RHDV2, detected in 2015, is now responsible for most deaths in domestic rabbits.

We recommend the Filavac vaccine, which protects against both strains. A single vaccination can be given from 10 weeks of age and provides immunity within 7 days, lasting for 12 months. Annual boosters are recommended to maintain your rabbit’s immunity.

Vaccinations for Birds and Reptiles

Currently, there are no mandatory vaccinations for birds and reptiles. However, we recommend regular check-ups to monitor your pet’s overall health and to address any specific concerns or preventative care needs for these species.
